Scaling & Polishing

Scaling & Polishing 2

What is Scaling & Polishing?
Scaling and polishing is a dental procedure that focuses on deep cleaning of the teeth to maintain optimal oral hygiene. It involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stains from teeth to prevent gum disease and maintain a bright, healthy smile. Scaling refers to the process of removing the hardened deposits (tartar) that cannot be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing. Polishing, on the other hand, involves smoothing the tooth surfaces to make them shiny and clean.

How is the Procedure Done?
During the procedure, a dentist or hygienist uses specialized tools to gently remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. Ultrasonic devices may be used for deeper cleaning, followed by manual instruments for fine detailing. After scaling, a polishing paste is applied using a soft rubber cup to smooth out any rough areas, leaving the teeth looking cleaner and brighter.

Who Should Consider Scaling & Polishing?
It is recommended for everyone as part of regular dental care. However, individuals who smoke, consume coffee or tea frequently, or have a history of gum problems may particularly benefit from this treatment. Dentists generally recommend scaling and polishing every 6 months for optimal results, although some may need it more frequently.
